Members of Congress are living off food stamps for a week to protest Republican cuts. It’s a challenge for them, but GOP cuts would hurt millions of everyday Americans

Never forget what you are, for surely the world will not. Make it your strength. Then it can never be your weakness. Armour yourself in it, and it will never be used to hurt you.

甲骨文,often translated as Oracle Bone Script, is the oldest known ancestor of modern Chinese script* (which comes in two forms, simplified and traditional, which I’ll talk about some other time). Their name comes from the fact that they are often found cut into the animal bones that were used in divining the future. Most record the pyromancy of the royal house of Shang Dynasty. They fell into disuse during the Zhou Dynasty, when divining with the milfoil flower became more popular, and is often synonymous with Shang Dynasty script, as the vast majority of 甲骨文 is found on artifacts from the Shang Dynasty.
Other contemporary forms of writing, like bronzeware script, were often more complex than oracle bone script, with rounds often being converted to angles and lines, due most likely to the difficulty of carving on bone. As such, the bronzeware script is considered the more typical style of Shang writing, which was likely most often done using a brush and ink and bound bamboo slats.
Chinese is often read up to down, right to left, but oracle bone script was organised such that you read from the centre out, creating a mirror image. Despite being ancient and pictographic, it is a complex, developed, and relatively mature form of writing capable of expressing complete thought rather than isolated ideas.
The Chinese writing system was not standardised, however, until the Qin Dynasty and its seal script, and so many variations of the same characters existed.
Oracle bone script was first (by contemporary measures) recognised as a form of ancient Chinese in 1899 by Wang Yirong, whose study of them was interrupted by the Boxer Rebellion.
*There were and still are more than just “a few” forms of Chinese script, including calligraphic and seal scripts, but when I talk about modern Chinese script I’m mostly referring to the two that are still in common usage.
